Best Time to Visit

The best time to travel to Oman is during the winter months from October to April, as the temperatures are milder and more comfortable for most travellers, ranging from 20 to 30°C. The air is dry and clear, and there is plenty of sunshine and blue skies. However, it is important to note that the mountainous regions receive more rainfall than the coastal areas. In contrast, the summer months from May to September are very hot and humid, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C and high humidity levels. Oman's southern province, Dhofar, experiences regular rainfall during the monsoon season from mid-June to September.

Where to Stay

Tourists in Oman have a variety of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from budget-friendly stays to luxurious resorts.

Mid-range accommodations include hotels and resorts, which offer more amenities and services than budget options. These can range from simple hotels to more upscale properties with swimming pools, spas, and restaurants.

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, Oman has many high-end resorts and hotels, some of which are located in stunning natural settings such as mountain ranges or along the coastline. These properties offer a range of luxurious amenities and services, including private beaches, fine dining restaurants, and spa facilities.

In addition to traditional accommodations, tourists in Oman can also choose to stay in unique accommodations such as desert camps or traditional Omani houses converted into guesthouses. These options offer visitors a chance to experience the culture and traditions of Oman in a more authentic way.

Getting Around

In general, we recommend a 4WD vehicle for the road trip. Although many roads are now asphalted and you drive relatively little off-road, it is precisely these routes that are the most interesting. With a short trip, you can also put together a nice program with a car, but if you have some time for excursions off the main attractions, this can be much more useful with a 4WD.

When to Start Planning your Trip

Currency & Payment

The currency of Oman is called the Rial (abbreviated as RO) and is divided into 1000 Baisa. The Rial is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 1 RO = 2.58 USD.

When it comes to bringing cash, it is less important whether it is in Euros or Dollars. Dollars have the advantage of a slightly better exchange rate and greater acceptance. However, when purchasing currency from the local bank, one may have to bear the deviation from the middle rate.

Credit cards of the MasterCard and Visa brands are widely accepted (less so for American Express and Diner’s Club) and can be used at most major hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, in the souqs, their acceptance is rather limited. Some shops offer price advantages when paying in cash. Credit cards and EC cards can also be used to withdraw money from numerous ATMs outside the opening hours of banks and exchange offices (provided the Maestro or Cirrus symbol is displayed, such as at the NBO) at a good exchange rate. For larger amounts (e.g. at the beginning of the trip), this is the most cost-effective way.

It is recommended to bring a portion of the travel budget in cash (possibly in US dollars). For paying larger amounts (hotel bill, expensive restaurants and souvenirs, as well as rental cars), credit cards are the most convenient option. For withdrawing money from ATMs and as a reserve, an EC/Maestro card is the best choice (or ideally, a credit card that allows withdrawals abroad without fees). However, never rely on just one card!

Security

Oman is considered a safe country for tourists to visit. The crime rate is low, and the government has made efforts to ensure the safety and security of visitors. However, as with any travel destination, it is important to exercise common sense and take necessary precautions to stay safe. This includes being aware of your surroundings, keeping valuables secure, and following local laws and customs. Additionally, it is recommended to avoid any protests or demonstrations, as these can sometimes turn violent.

Visa & Immigration Rules

EU tourists who wish to travel to Oman need to obtain an eVisa in advance of their arrival. The eVisa can be obtained online through the Royal Oman Police website (evisa.rop.gov.om) or through authorised agencies. The eVisa is valid for a stay of up to 30 days and can be used for tourism, visiting family or friends, or business purposes. Visitors should have a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Oman. Additionally, visitors may be required to provide proof of onward travel and a hotel reservation.

Health & Hygiene

In general, the hygiene conditions and medical care in Oman are good to very good.

If travelling from a yellow fever infection area (e.g. in West Africa) or if you have stayed in one within the previous two weeks, a yellow fever vaccination is also necessary.

Family doctors, health authorities, and tropical institutes will provide information on which vaccinations or precautions are necessary or recommended.

Although high-quality medication is available everywhere in Oman, it is still advisable to bring a well-equipped travel pharmacy. It is particularly useful for unexpected emergencies and provides a certain sense of security. Standard medications (sometimes under different names) are available in every pharmacy. Travellers who regularly take certain medications should bring a corresponding supply.
